While we grow closer to completing the 21-storey tower, which will signify the completion of Phase 1, we are already making progress with Phase 2 of the New Era Square ‘Sheffield Chinatown’ project.

The demolition of the old red-brick KH Oriental supermarket building has now been carried out, ready to make way for the contemporary buildings planned for Phase 2 of the project, which has been approved by Sheffield City Council’s planning department.

The project team, led by main contractors Bowmer & Kirkland, is now progressing with the enabling works for the two buildings that make up Phase 2. Phase 2 of New Era Square will include more student accommodation, parking for cars and bicycles, and a range of large restaurant and retail units. The section of Boston Street that will sit within New Era Square, now a private road, will be pedestrianised to include outdoor café seating and space for open air events.

Perhaps the star of the show will be the final block in Phase 2, which is planned to house conference and meeting space, a restaurant/banqueting suite for private dining events, a GP surgery and the China-UK Business Incubator (CUBI) – an innovative trade-centre set to promote business between China and Sheffield, to be run by a public-private sector partnership.

Once the final block is built, the entire project is due to come to completion by spring/summer 2020. With cranes popping up all over the city skyline, we look forward to welcoming a ‘new era’ in Sheffield!
